In a post titled “Medical maggots, cancer-fighting wasps and healing honey: The weird ways insects help our health” CNN writer Josh Korber Hoffman explores some of the medical benefits of insects. The article mentions how medicinal maggots have been used for wound healing for centuries and that recent studies show that the larvae can help disinfect wounds, as well. The article also notes that the meloid beetle (commonly called a blister beetle or the Spanish Fly) has been used for treating a viral skin infection called molluscum contagiosum. The beetle secretes a caustic defense molecule called cantharidin which has been used in Asia for this infection and is being explored as a possible cancer treatment. Many other insects were mentioned in the article, as well. Hats off to Mr. Hoffman for helping to raise awareness of biotherapy. To read the article click here https://shorturl.at/WuE4l.
